About The Artwork

My work for the past 40 years has been inspired by my love of the sport of surfing, nature and the ocean. I shot this water shot photo during the Billabong Pipeline Masters in the winter of 88/89 the N. Shore of Oahu the beach. The swell this day was hitting 30" to 35' on the faces and the trade winds were a perfect direction that helped open up cavernous tubes for the surfers that were competing to win the Pipe Masters Crown and the Triple Crown of Surfing trophy. One of the advantages for both the surfers and photographers being out at Pipeline during the Pipe Masters surfing competition back then was that there were only 2 surfers in the water and only 3 photographers allowed in the water one from each magazine Surfer and Surfing and one TV guy. On a regular day at Pipeline with good waves you might find over 100 surfers and 60 to 70 or more photographers in the water jockeying for position to get the perfect water shot that will net them a magazine cover shot or a full page or double page ad spread. I digitally painted this image using the original 35mm slide. I scanned it and then used a digital airbrush and other photo art techniques I employ to create the painting. I like show the flow of the water in my images and the vibe of the moment. Pipeline is a very dangerous place to surf and to photograph from the water. Numerous surfers and photographers have been killed over the years while surfing and photographing this wave. It's deadly so you have to be prepared before you every paddle out to surf or swim out to shoot photos. This particular wave was gigantic. You could fit a semi truck into the tube. This was my best day ever out shooting water shots at Pipeline. I trained for years just for this particular day so I could swim out of trouble, survive to shoot images and swim safely back to the beach out of the danger zone. I had been dreaming of capturing this image for over a decade. It took lots of preparation to get the camera gear and water housing dialed in. The physical training took years in order to be able to swim out there on this big day and bring back to goods accomplishing this goal. Surfer Magazine published numerous shots I submitted to them from this particular day. I ended up getting a cover this day which was my second Surfer magazine cover and my first cover from my work in Hawaii. At the time I shot this there were no auto focus cameras no auto anything so you really had to know your stuff in order to be able to capture images like this. You risk life and limb hanging out in the impact zone swimming under waves two to three stories high waiting to capture that perfect shot. There's no guarantee that you'll get the shot but if you put yourself in position to capture the images magic somehow unfolds right before your eyes. And this day I was rewarded for the decade of hard work I put in preparing just for this day. I shoot my images on both 35mm slide film and digitally. I output the original artwork to either canvas or aluminum and then add acrylic paint at that time when I deem the image demands it. Acrylic paint is added to some of my pieces to highlight certain areas. This painting does not have the acrylic paint added. This particular piece was finished on 12/5/15 and the original has not been printed to either canvas or aluminum yet. This image if you want the original can be printed on canvas as a Giclee at 40" x 60" or on aluminum up to 48" x 96" I leave that up to the buyer to decide which way they want to have it. Shipping cost to be determined upon the sale and location for the delivery.
