About The Artwork

*144 individual 6 x 6in sintra prints **Install with adhesive tape, not provided www.violetluczak.com @violet_luczak_design There’s nothing better than an average day in Arlington Heights, Illinois. I know exactly what is going to happen, how the day will piece together, and that’s okay. I wake up to the dog barking. It’s approximately 11 a.m. on a Saturday summer morning, and I have zero plans for the day. Mom is in the living room in her PJs. She’s sitting on the couch working on her schoolwork. She notices I am awake and asks if I want go to Denny’s for breakfast, a regular outing between us. I contemplate going since I’m on a diet, but I agree to go since I haven't spent time with Mom in a while. On the way to the restaurant we stop for gas [at brand?]. Mom has a tendency to never fill up her tank until the last possible moment, the main reason we all hate borrowing her van, the second being that the license plate reads “PHD MAMA”. As we pull up to the Shell, Mom tells me about her life. She fills me in on the drama happening at her work, and I do my best to hear her out while also convincing her to not send a harshly worded email that would ultimately backfire. We arrive at Denny’s and order our classic, Pick 4 Build Your Own Grand Slam. We split it. I order oatmeal and eggs, and Mom orders fruit and a biscuit. Tradition. We head back home on our full tank of gas, and I tell Mom about my life. About how in a few weeks I’ll have to move and relocate to Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. About how excited I am to do this thing I’ve always wanted to do, but how I wish it wasn’t approaching so quickly. About how I’m scared to leave my boyfriend and family, but mostly how upset I am that they don’t have Jewel Osco’s out there. We drive home, and I ponder how to spend my time next. My Mom has to finish up her work, so I go for a swim in the backyard pool. I put Jack White on the Sony speakers and float in the water. I think about how perfect our backyard is. Bright flowers surrounding a huge pool and a covered gazebo that my Dad built with pineapple lights hanging down. I’m going to miss this backyard. I send a picture of the pool to a Facebook group chat between us old high school friends, and soon they are over with their swimsuits. I knew they’d all be free. I knew they’d come over. We swim around and talk about our jobs and how we don’t want the weekend to be over. Zoe tells us the same stories she told us last week. We laugh and act as though we’ve never heard them before. We order a Dominos pizza and move out of the water to the gazebo. We play Hearts and Golf, our go-to card games. We tend to become wildly competitive over card games. We aren't naturally competitive people, but there is something about card games and the anticipation of teasing one another that arouses an inflated competitive spirit within us. Alex wins, as always. I lose, as always. We take a break from our games, and Alex tells us about the car dealership he works at with his dad. I don’t know anything about cars. I recognize the brands, though. My friends leave and the night begins to end. I lay on the living room floor playing with my dog while listening to Dad’s Discovery Channel shows. Dad tells me he picked a fresh batch of home grown tomatoes and basil from the backyard. I love hearing how proud Dad is of his garden. Another day is coming to a close. I lie down in my room and watch some television to decompress before bed. I turn the lights off and think about tomorrow, how I will wake up in the same house, go to the same places and see the same people. How it will be exactly the same as it was yesterday, and the day before that, and that’s okay.
