About The Artwork

Before leaving office, President Dwight D. Eisenhower spoke one last time and warned the American people about the threat of the military industry. It was in 1961. “With Waropoly, slip into the skin of a Western warlord, establish control through domination, exploitation and/or the destruction of others so as to implement your secret plans and realize your dark ambitions!” This first issue of the board game is originally edited in two sizes numbered and signed (altough a unlimited unsigned edition is available here). It will also be adapted to bespoke installations. The counters and cards thus conceptualized are also realized in series of their own. Ultimately, the work will be issued as a real board game to be played on, with each of its components edited under a practical form.

Through my work, I play around our symbols, our fake divinities and our familiar objects in order to shed on them a more revealing and striking light, one closer to my perception of our civilization and of how it has been, and is still being built, lead, driven and motioned. I explore my favorite themes with the sense of humor of a curious child repurposing his toys – geopolitics, history, technology, the environment and, more sporadically, sex. I have always been amazed at the contrast between nature and civilization. The natural part of our world is full of wonders, of resources and sensations that civilization has somehow driven us away from, almost estranged, thus preventing us from achieving complete upbringing as a species. To me, the complex world built by man is disorienting, disharmonious with God’s original work as I embrace it – the planet that let us be born. And yet, its overall creativity flirts with the Divine. My work allows me to take a stand but never in a Manichean way, as good and evil appear to me as subjective notions after all. Black and white are not true colors but grey is, rich of thousands of hues. Multi-faceted by nature, I explore several media and choose to fit them to the topics they aim to reveal. The desire to venture into various aspects of ideas and to decipher their most intricate details is extremely important, although I will allow myself a salutary improvisation whenever the theme feels right.
