About The Artwork

This piece is the culmination of layers of acrylic mediums and paint, spackling paste, and eleven separate pigment ink image transfers layered individually onto a cradled wood panel to compose the artwork. Inspired by the natural biological process of cell division (mitosis), and humanity's longing to feel one with nature, I created Tree Birth as a depiction of growth - from a single cell, to an embryo-like creature. The building blocks of the three stages are photographs of cedar stumps from British Columbia, Canada, with the body of the final stage taken from a detail photograph of a Banyan tree in Hawaii. I hope viewers of this piece tap into a subconscious feeling of connectedness with nature, or of a base, sub-human instinct-level emotion that is usually unexplored. As with most art, the exact meaning of the piece is really best left to the viewer, and serves as a great conversation starter. All materials used were carefully selected to ensure longevity and structural stability over time. There are two saw-tooth hangers on the back, so it is ready to go up on the wall. It can also be displayed on an easel in a corner. The sides are finished with a bare acrylic wash of raw umber, without any glossing or varnish, so that it still feels like natural wood to the touch. The surface is sealed with acrylic medium, and not only is it safe to touch with your fingers - I invite you to do so to enhance your connection with the piece!

Radina Droumeva is a conceptual photography-based artist living and creating in the small community of Ladner, BC, Canada. She finds endless inspiration in the peace and solitude of her natural surroundings. Radina's work explores physical and psychological relationships in her environment through surrealism of still life objects. Her scientific background as a bioinformatician allows Radina to combine biological and mathematical research techniques with digital processing. Radina's main approach to creating involves the use of iterative stages - photographs of individual objects or scenery are guided through a cyclical process, coaxing subconscious ideas to life.
