“WAKE UP! Use Your Brain "The image of Igor in Mel Brooks' Frankenstein Junior was perfect for remembering that we have a brain and it could be interesting to use it ... complete with instructions for use ... The WAKE UP! once again he uses a Pop image to scream not to live life like automatons, to not only listen to what we are told, but to use our brain to inform us, to ask us questions, and to understand the world.

GIORGIA LANCELLOTTI GRADUATED IN TEXTILE ART FROM THE INSTITUTE OF ART G. CHIERICI IN REGGIO EMILIA AND SOON STARTED TO WORK AS A DIGITAL GRAPHIC DESIGNER. CURRENTLY SHE IS EMPLOYED AS A GRAPHIC DESIGNER AT THE EUROPEAN HEADQUARTERS OF CHAMPION WHILST STILL DEDICATING HERSELF TO HER ARTISTIC CAREER. THE DIGITAL ART PIECES CREATED TO BE PUBLISHED ONLINE OR PRINTED HAVE BEEN INSPIRED BY THE LANGUAGE OF POP ART WHICH GIVES LIFE TO THE CHARACTERS AND SETTINGS OF THE 80S AND 90S. IT’S A TESTIMONY TO THE CONTRADICTIONS OF DAILY LIFE AND FOCUSES ON THE DIFFICULTIES OF REALITY IN EVERYDAY SITUATIONS. THE CHARACTERS OF HER STREET ART ARE FAMOUS; THEY HAVE BEEN DECONTEXTUALISED, BECOMING VEHICLES WHICH POWERFULLY CONVEY A SOCIAL MESSAGE THAT AT TIMES CAN APPEAR TO BE BOTH IRONIC AND AN APPEAL FOR CHANGE. GIORGIA LANCELLOTTI’S STYLE MOVES AWAY FROM THE BRASH COLOURS OR DOMINEERING GRAPHICS THAT SOMETIMES CHARACTERISES STREET ART; THE HUES ARE TONED DOWN AND FADED, MUCH LIKE AN OLD PHOTOGRAPH. THE GRAPHICS ARE INSPIRED BY ELEMENTS TAKEN FROM COMICS THAT, TOGETHER WITH THE SIMPLE BACKGROUND COMPOSITIONS, OFFER AN UNEXPECTED VINTAGE ASPECT WHICH IS THE SIGNATURE STYLE OF THE ARTIST. THERE IS A NOTABLE REFERENCE BACK TO SURREALISM IN HER OTHER CREATIONS. EVEN THOUGH THE SURREALISM IS ONLY HINTED AT, THE MOMENT BECOMES POETIC WHEN THE LANGUAGE OF POP ART IS DILUTED OR CEASED TO GIVE A MESSAGE OF HOPE. THE DIGITAL ICONS PULL US INTO THE NARRATIVE OF THE CONTEMPORARY WORLD WITH AN ORIGINAL VIEWPOINT AND BY THE SENSITIVITY OF A DELICATE HAND THAT KNOWINGLY INVITES US TO BECOME INVOLVED AND “USE OUR MIND” SO AS NOT TO FORGET HUMAN VALUES
