About The Artwork

What’s Going On (serie Helden- 02) 1/1 Number 2 from the series Helden/Heroes. This serie contains manipulated photographs of my personal heroes. Number one was David Bowie, nr 2 is titled What’s Going On, featuring Marvin Gaye. This series is a hommage to them that inspired, motivated and touched me and by doing so made a valuable contribution to my ‘being’. I believe strongly we need heroes to get the best out of our selves. My heroes, in my opinion, are creative prodigies, stars that shine so bright that they are still burning and glowing decennia ever after. That certainly applies for my hero 02- Marvin Gaye, as far as I am concerned, the undisputed king of soul. Soul, hardcore soul! I must have been 12/13 years old when I heard the song Sexual healing for the fist time. This song, was the reason for buying his album Midnight Love. I listened it over and over again until I knew every tone, every tune and vocal inflections. Maybe a strange combination, Bowie, Jackson and Gaye, but I was only 13 years old, so… Besides everything seemed fluid back than, Bowie experimenting with Jazz and soul, Jackson playing with rocksounds and Marvin exploring disco. What they had in common was their unworldly greatness. Back to Marvin, after Midnight Love I got eager for more, unfortunately he got killed by his own father in 1984. So the only way for more was travel back in time. I gradual discovered the albums, I Want You, Lets get It On en Whats Going On and was sold for live. I already liked soul music but still this was something else, it seemed deeper, more raw, sexier, more tragic, more sensitive and more apocalyptic. His voice touches my deepest consciousness, my soul. I feel him and wish I could live inside his warm and fluid voice. Soul is a music genre with essence but what Marvin’s music learned me in my life to come, was that Soul can be true soul. Not something you do, but something you are, a state of being, becoming pure love. I will not ever achieve the full 100% but It is a strive for live. Richness is a mental state, love is the state of the soul. Money, power or status has nothing to do with it. It is at the most something you stumble on accidentally. Not only is this a hommage to Marvin Gaye and soul music it is also a plea for more soul in the 21th century. I dare to state that by listening to Marvin Gaye you might get a better, softer , warmer version of your selves. It is a comfort for the soul. Havent done it yet, try it? My 'original' hommage is a signed print on canvas 1/1 120/80cm.

I can experience art on many levels and in many different ways. Then I look for aesthetics and eloquence but also for a particular angle. I make contemporary engaged art. It has a certain urgency. It is reflecting us, people and the zeitgeist. Images speak louder than words and basically appeal very directly to our feelings. My images are something of a mix between activism and philosophy, they want to engage in dialogue.” I am born in Hoorn (NH) (1970) and have been working as a visual artist since 1994. My studio is located at the Rieteweg 10 in Zwolle. I am a multidisciplinary artist. My autonomous work includes painting, collage, installation, digital art, photo manipulation, video art and 3d. I also work on commission and on a project basis. Typical for my autonomous work is the key role for man in its shape and behaviour. It is often a reflection of current social themes, but also mundane and personal issues are important sources of inspiration. Through small interventions, repetitions, inversions, or breaking surfaces with architectural forms, a new image is created in a somewhat familiar image. Although my work can be seen as aesthetic, it often conceals certain uneasiness, abrasive aesthetics. This duality or ambiguity is also a recurring theme. Do you see what you see? The resulting images are often on the cutting edge of fiction, realism, graphic and plastic. Contemporary (sur)realist?- My work cannot be placed in a tradition or movement. There are certainly surrealistic elements in my work and occasionally some abstraction, but in terms of style I draw from (contemporary) realism. Until now, I have been able to express myself best in the figurative, although I do not rule out anything for the future. As far as I am concerned, art is fluid and and artist never stop evolving. I do not wish to limit myself, neither to a medium, nor to autonomous art. I see myself much more as a conduit of concepts and ideas. Often my ideas are interspersed with philosophical questions and/or social themes that occupy me. I therefore sometimes set myself the task of casting these in project form, if only within the limitations of visual art. This has resulted in a number of projects varying from social to future-oriented.
