About The Artwork

Most of the portraits arose as a result of my suggestion to people to pose for me. Thus, a circle of persons emerged, whom I recognized during the session. Oil painting is a metaphor for contact with reality as a very, very deep mutual penetration. As if a permission to open any secret doors. And I never know beforehand where I will end up. There is sort of an internal compass in me, and I trust it. Watercolor is a more airy and transparent technique. A thin, mobile brush is like an extension of myself, conveys all the painful states hidden in the face. ension of myself, conveys all the painful states hidden in the face. Images of people emerge through their faces. Sometimes the face mask is quite thin. So the image becomes immediately visible. But usually the image is carefully hidden in a safe place. I question: is it possible or not? If yes, image helps me and we have a lot of joy. If not, the model simply does not come. Something suddenly happens, the session is postponed for long.

I was born in the former Soviet Union in 1960. Since 2022 I've been living in Karmiel. Self-taught. I investigate the connection of Bodily and Spiritual during cancer, life with elderly mom, faces and images of my models. Building internal independence is a very important part of my art. Creating figurative, naive and abstract paintings I use various techniques and materials, including oil, acryl, ink, watercolors, oil and dry pastels. I exhibit in the Museum of Urban Sculpture (St. Petersburg, 2005), The White Gallery (London, 2006), Agora Gallery (New York, 2007, 2009), and Spectrum Miami (2016-2020). Some works are kept in public and private museums of the Russian Federation, in private collections in North America, Europe, Israel, and Russia. . Ink, pen and pencils are my diary, my way of understanding reality. Any misunderstanding, inhibition, or irritation pushes me to draw. The pen allows for a very subtle and detailed immersion into the problem. I formulate the task, tune into it, then draw sensations in my body. I trust my hand and my interpretations. Often thoughts that formed reality manifest themselves at once. I examine the first approach of ink and pen and try to understand what it represents. Whose thoughts are these? How did they come to me? Can I change them immediately? Most often, I need to apply color and water blurring. The choice of color is based on knowledge of medical Qigong and other esoteric practices. The second approach is with colored Derwent pencils. Usually, it allows more expression and liberates hidden anger, and brush washing opens the flow of stagnant emotions. Sennelier's oil gold or silver pastel symbolizes gratitude, forgiveness, and letting go. Each session brings me to a more harmonious, resourceful state, in one way or another, and I can continue to live my life. If I skip this routine, I eventually begin to feel fear of being buried under a snowball of unstructured experiences.
