About The Artwork

M. Demura, a sculpture of Catalan origins, gathers mankind’s fundamental themes and reflects upon what, for Emile Durkheim, is the gap left behind once science displaced religion. The apparent exhibition of topics such as gender and Eros or Thanatos, are but formal distractions that through playfulness and harmony, convert the plastic experience into mysticism. M. Demura’s approach is contextualized between will and fortune. In contemporary terms, it could be described as both minimalist and biomorphic art. The author makes use of a strategy of sensorial manipulation that, by delimitating chance, guides the spectator towards absolute whiteness, undetermination, uncertainty or magic. In other words, it is the whiteness of a new beginning. The current collection is, in a certain way, the reverse of M. Demura’s previous phase. If a brief glance previously sufficed to grasp the themes’ general traits, this exhibit adopts a more detailed point of view. This time, the work is more textured and vibrant, revealing its human dimension through the paroxysm of its topics. If before it was love, it is now its carnal opposite; if it was death, it is now anguish. +Paul Arnaut Daniel

MESALLES DEMURA. Biography A sculptor with a multidisciplinary background, Mesalles Demura, originally from Catalonia, lives between Barcelona and Níger. Demura initiated her career in the world of performance and drama in 1994, as a member and director of diverse manifestations of performing arts. While participating in amateur companies such as "˜Burroughs Desnudo' - fashioned by its strong literary underpinning - as well as "˜Aimia adesiarA', or "˜Cants de Mort', in the field of theatre, Demura specialized in sculpture under the tuition of Gabriel, Tom Carr and Cami (La Massana, Barcelona 2004), performance and medieval arts with Ricart Salvat and Jordi Roca (University of Barcelona) and was a member of the art group B-612 between 2002 and 2011. Demura's work draws from various sources, among which one identifies Mediterranean and Oriental influences, as well as reflections on contemporary formal precepts already established in the work of Brancusi, Jean Arp, or Noguchi. In Demura's more figurative work, one recalls the will of expression of the late 19th century German authors. Her first solo exhibition took place at "˜The Gallery' in Islington , London, in May 2012.
