About The Artwork

acrylic colours on handmade thai mulberry paper(kada sa), deckled edges, 10 x 13.5 in, 24 x 35 cm More building frontage. This kind of building, the shophouse is a common structure found in South East Asia. The older style as in this painting, are getting less and less. And I do love old architecture … so every now and then I’ll do one of these. And every time the brush stroke ends up different, as the total feel, so each one really stands on its own merit. This time I really got into the finesse of it… might come from sitting so close to the paper! But true to the actual building, and the texture of the parchment like paper just adds to that mood. I use a traditional mulberry paper handmade in Thailand. It’s a parchment like paper, strong yet pliable. I have the paper made to this size to get the deckled edges which adds to the textural effect. For the the print I have cropped the uneven ‘deckled edges’. The close up picture is to get a better feel for the texture and brush strokes of the painting. Then there’s the work in progress, and me with the painting. Interested to have your idea painted in this style? Maybe a storyboard collage from a recent travel, your house or street? Contact me. About framing this painting. When considering framing bear in mind to not cover up the deckled edges. This is one of the specialties of the painting, one of its charms. It is best displayed framed with a cut mat board around the painting so as not to cover the edges, thereby putting some space between the art and the glass and bringing depth to the framed art. It can also be framed simply with backing board and pressed with glass over the front without causing damage.

I'm Canadian born now residing in Malaysia. I've been working professionally as an artist since 1980 ish… time flies. I have exhibited my paintings in Vancouver and coastal B.C., Bangkok, Singapore & Malaysia, areas I’ve lived in over time. Now I do it all online. I’ve traveled extensively over the years and you’ll see that people, places and cultures are a recurring theme in my art. I attach importance to papers I use for my paintings. Some are done on acid free watercolour papers, from 180lb weight to 300lb. I also use handmade parchment type papers. These are thick yet pliable, strong, with deckled edge that add to the look of my paintings. I’m still a passionate guy. I’m passionate about life and people, passionate about art and painting. And I feel really at my best when I’m putting all these things down on paper. I only wish I had more time to delve into all these activities of mine. But I work with what I have. My health sucks so I’m slowing down. And there's more: book illustration, portrait, comic strip, caricature. I also work with camera and computer, to create the images brush strokes just can't deliver. So follow my brush work and hopefully you’ll find that special painting meant just for you.
