Here, surrounded by flowers, I have hope. The fields are inviting yet forbidding. You respect them as a farmer’s crop and yet you want to envelop yourself in their golden hue. Vincent painted “Old Man in Sorrow” in Saint Remy in a later period of overcoming mental illness. My own self portrait is of a Middle-Aged Man in Rapeseed. I am in the pose of Rodin’s Thinker, and am on a journey that seems to be taking me forward. It is an optimistic vision. The narrow brush marks mix with the broader brush strokes, a joining of the style of thin edge and flat brushwork to create an overall effect of being surrounded with positive feeling.
