About The Artwork

"68 Liberty" is a tribute to Olympic Gold Medalist Tommie Smith, inspired by iconic images from the 1968 Summer Games in Mexico City. The plaque held by Smith reads, "Who in the Hell is Diana Nash?" A direct quote from Robert F. Kennedy on April 17th, 1961 when he first heard of a newly appointed leader of the Freedom Riders en route from Nashville to Birmingham, Alabama. The Storm Trooper is a reference, and my response to, an artist image that depicted Tommie Smith and John Carlos with Darth Vader helmets and Australian sprinter Peter Norman with a Storm Trooper helmet.
