9th Circle of Hell Painting

9th Circle of Hell –2008 In this work I was influenced by Dante Alighieri and his Divine Comedy, the most important poem of the Middle Ages and the greatest literary work in the Italian language. Divine Comedy, the full epic, was published in 1472, follows Dante’s journey through Hell, Purgatory, and Heaven. The Ninth Circle of Hell depicts a frozen lake and, like Dante's vision of Hell in general, the Ninth Circle itself is divided into rings of increasingly bad sections with the worst in the centre. The people who are sent to the Ninth Circle are people who have betrayed the trust of someone. In the centre is giant figure of Satan who has three faces. Each face has a mouth that chews eternally on a prominent traitor. Brutus and Cassius dangle with their feet in the left and right mouths, respectively, for their involvement in the assassination of Julius Caesar 44 BC an act which, to Dante, represented the destruction of a unified Italy.
