About The Artwork

With this style of work, I use abstraction to explore the marrying and juxtapositions between the purity and perfection of mathematical systems and concepts which underlie universal structure, and human imperfection. The fundamental designs of the works are founded heavily on, and follow mathematical concepts like the Fibonacci sequence and golden ratio, things like Mersenne and Chen prime sequences, certain mathematical systems which lie at the heart of color theory, and other such concepts. The design and lay-out of the initial structure and composition of the work is heavily reliant on these concepts, but the initial design is then worked, colored and lined free-hand, using the foundational design as a guide. Mistakes are accepted and left untouched during this phase, without re-working, rather than being corrected -- introducing the imperfection of the observer/human creator attempting to, and falling short of, mimicking natural creation. It is hoped that through this work, the human relationship to the universe he or she finds himself in might be explored, questioned, illustrated or communicated in at least some minuscule way -- and, perhaps, in ways to which written or spoken language is not conducive. In a way, it is a sort of vulgar, exaggerated study of how humans create all art. And, if all that fails, the hope is that, in the very least, the resulting image will be aesthetically pleasing in at least some way to at least a fair number of observers. To achieve the flat nature of the work, free of any indications of brush-work, along with the intensity of color, I use the finest quality acrylic paints, thinned heavily, then laid on the canvas, layer after layer, in order to build the color to the vibrancy and opacity I desire. For this reason, acrylics are chosen over oils in order to minimize drying times between coats, as some colors might require as many as a dozen coats of paint. With the exception of black, no color you see on the canvas was painted in less than three coats, and before any colors are laid down, the surface is prepped with two coats of acrylic gesso, then toned with two to four coats of thinned bright yellow, or light gray, depending on the particular work. The foundational design is then laid out on top of that in graphite. Also, depending on the particular work, a layer of acrylic varnish may be placed between the final toning layer and the painting, or the gesso layer and toning layers, or both. With regards to the particular work featured here, titled "A Blinding Vision at Morro do Vintem", I assure you that you'll need neither a raincoat, nor a lead blindfold to view and enjoy this painting.

Derek R. Audette is a multidisciplinary artist -- A grand-master accubationist, as well as something of a painter, photographer, poet, and musician. His musical work has appeared in countless film, television and video game productions, and he has written and published two books of poetry -- one of which resides in the Harris Collection of American Poetry at Brown University. A number of his works in the visual arts currently reside in a number of private collections. And, it is for these reasons, more than any, really, that it's rumored (in certain circles) that the boy figures himself as some sort of an artist, or something. The term "creative genius" has even been used -- although, such an utterance has only ever been documented to have been spoken by his Mother. Nevertheless, there is that. Among his other accomplishments, Audette has been known, from time to time, to 'act all a fool', and do a pretty bang-up job of it, too! He indulges, he outdulges, he eats and sleeps, he enjoys the occasional shindig and even the odd hullabaloo, but makes a serious effort to try and steer clear of the more shady what-have-yous and goings on. Unless, of course, they happen to feature an open bar. The local villagers say that he stands something less than 12 feet tall, and weighs in at a whopping large to approaching very large in physical dimension. And, as should be expected, he makes things -- and some of those things can be viewed and purchased here.
