About The Artwork

The inspiration for the work "A FATHER-SON ODYSSEY - Strange Sea Animal at Coimbatore" came from an event near Coimbatore, India on a trip when the artist Joaquin De Mondo was still very young and traveling the country with his father and his Indian hosts. Joaquin's father, who had already got to know India in the 1960s, acted as a tour guide who was enthusiastic about India's culture and with whom the group traveled to almost every place in Tamil Nadu and its sights with their own van and driver. For Joaquin, at his young age, this was interesting and exciting, but at times also quite exhausting. So what had happened? She reached a beach early in the morning. Their hosts warned Joaquin's father and him not to go into the sea. There were no specific reasons. Joaquin's father, however, was not deterred. It's worth mentioning that, unlike Joaquin, he was always a fearless swashbuckler throughout his life. So he went straight into the sea. Joaquin and the others stayed on the beach. Then it happened. After his father was about 20 meters away in the sea and the water was up to his chest, he suddenly started screaming in pain. It all happened very quickly. Joaquin asked his hosts to do something. But they were all terrified and none of them dared to go into the sea. Little Joaquin had no choice but to get into the sea himself and help his father. Full of fear, he rushed into the sea and pulled his beloved father out. His father had a deep injury to his foot. It later turned out to be a moraine bite. As the wound was infected, it took about 3 months before Joaquin's father was able to walk again. Although Joaquin's father was very proud of his son and told this story to many friends, this did not stop him from getting into similar situations in the future...

Joaquin De Mondo's art reveals a tension resulting from rational doubt, which for him follows from the inadequacies of modernism and the recognizable inapplicability of conservative views. His doubt is the origin of his striving for clear artistic statements - sometimes overly concrete, sometimes mysteriously abstract - executed with strong colours and evident dynamism in form and lines, but sometimes in a different way: in disciplined geometric compositions. Joaquin De Mondo's active and creative power and his seriousness in dealing with current issues of nature and culture lead to a variety of interesting and meaningful representations and compositions in his oeuvre, which reflect his feelings on a surprising level. His works are captivating analyses of existence and will, his contemplations, ideas and dreams. Joaquin De Mondo works conscientiously and at a remarkable standard. Interesting about his more recent works is the powerful stillness, the use of strong colours, an unusual relief-like structural technique, striking colour transitions, with an astonishing harmonic dynamic, which leads directly to the motto of his ambitions: A primal direct force that communicates itself to the viewer at first glance and holds him captive.
