About The Artwork

My work begins with an experience of the absence that came out of losing family and that's why some uneasy emotion is accompanied all the time. The mind that wants to deny present makes my memory returns to the past and I collected past photos. The static memory in the photo gave me comfort sometimes, but it gradually seems strange. I started to express the disturbance between the comfort and strangeness by painting, most familiar medium for me. The overall image shape had been newly expressed with a slight omission, a clear contrast of colors, and the figures' exaggerated face expressions. In that way, I tried to take a sense of the 'Deja-vu' as a kind of chemistry that happens in the process of conversion from photo to painting. Gradually, when the sadness caused by the absence diminished and emotions became new points of change, the work flowed in a new direction. I've focused on the specific part of the picture by using ‘Cropping’, the way only used oil painting have changed using with oil painting, oil pastel, charcoal to leave repetition of body motion and temporality in the screen so it started to show the motion of the hand. Delete a part which include faces of people in the old picture or remanufacture the covered image a painting will form the quality and quantity of information that could extend correlations to more people and the work

Hello. I'm Jimin Lim, an artist from Korea. My work is inspired by the absence of my dad. After my dad passed away, I became extremely unstable, which made me often look through family photos with deep longing for the past. Unlike the dark time during my dad's fight against the disease, my family looked very happy in the photos. It seemed very familiar, yet distant. I interpret these moments into painting. I paint fragmented parts of the photos zoomed into people’s hands. Sometimes, through an absence, you feel the presence. Likewise, the cropped parts on canvas will stimulate your imagination even more. Thank you.
