About The Artwork

A Rainbow in the Storm “Falling Up” is a series of paintings created in response to the Yorkshire landscape. Jagger revisited the area where she grew up to explore the landscape from a new perspective. Her sketches and paintings focus on the flow of water through the landscape, metaphorically water transforming from cloud to rain, then river source to sea, representing one cycle of life. The elements at play suggest the force of nature and inevitable passing of time, the man-made architecture and objects on the landscape provide signposts to locations, time and a human scale. This painting is a direct response to landscape along Pennine Way, near Wessenden Head Resevoir which is located in Wessenden Valley, a moorland valley in the Dark Peak, south of Masden in the English County of West Yorkshire. The name Wessenden derives from Old English and means the 'valley with rock suitable for whetstones' “The weather in this part of the world seems to offer everything in seconds, a day can almost be transformed to night by the rolling in of heavy clouds. For me the rainbow connects all the elements and holds everything in one perfect form, it’s brevity only adding to the spectacle of nature.”.
