About The Artwork
For me, art is the world that I have created for myself living between the "East" and the "West," between "tradition" and "modernity", between Seoul, Baltimore, Washington DC, Paris, and LA. However, 'between' all this, I have come to appreciate even more the traditional beauty of Korea that is fast fading as the country modernizes at a breakneck speed. It is heartening to see that the beauty of "hanbok," the traditional Korean dress, is being much appreciated recently. However, when I painted this back in 2008, "hanbok" seemed to be fading which is why I painted this, trying to capture the moment three women all dressed up in "hanbok," goes about busily getting ready to greet guests on a spring day.

I currently work out of a studio in Toechon, a rural village just east of Seoul, near the beautiful Paldang reservoir. I have lived and studied in Korea, the U.S. and France. My favorite medium is oil, but in the past five years, I have been working with mixed-media, using clay to mold shapes and figures inspired by traditional Korean roofed-tiles and rice-cakes, among others.
