About The Artwork

This work started as a process experiment, with the objective being to explore the use of a deeply textured substrate made up of parallel lines / grooves, over which multiple layers of glazes could be applied, allowing a glaze and its pigment particles to pool in the grooves, thereby allowing the grooves to control the visual texture of the composition. As layers of warm toned glazes were added, and as darker toned glazes were added to towards the corners to achieve a vignette effect, a composition emerged. The composition is intentionally ambiguous, at once resembling a Celtic knot or circular glyph, while at the same time being suggestive of a sunset or sunrise, with a distinct candidate for a horizon line. The title of the work is also intentionally ambiguous and somewhat of a pun - in numerous respects there is symmetry in the work, while at the same time there is obvious asymmetry. Hence, the title "A Symmetry Proposition" indicates the potential or proposal of symmetry in the work, but not an achievement of symmetry, while the first two word "A symmetry" sound like and are wryly suggestive of the antonym "asymmetry", so speaking the title is ambiguous: is it "A Symmetry Proposition" or "Asymmetry Proposition"? When spoken, it's unclear. Mission accomplished.
