Abstract blue Painting

Because the painter of these canvases, eager to seduce us with this beautiful book presenting nearly 130 pictures is the exact opposite of a tormented artist. On the contrary, it’s always and most of all the principle of pleasure which guides his creativity. Pigments instinctively mixed to translate colours met in dreams, bits of rough materials added to the paint, not forgetting brushes, knives used as tools, all those are feeling matters. In total freedom, the artist wants, firstly, to enjoy himself. Happy self-taught man, Hervé Souffi came into painting certainly because it had to be. No mentor came across during his younger years, a family environment distant from what’s called “the artistic world”: the image obsession worked its way quietly, tumbling down first through photography. A won contest, a given prize, and a confession: yes the young man was painting “on the side”; a few gouaches and some borrowed brushes and that was it! At 25 a painter was born. Since, Hervé Souffi has never stopped enjoying himself. And giving pleasure, meeting people and success during exhibitions, fairs, in France and in Europe, in the States and in Japan… The artist, who never went to art school and describes himself as “wild” in the way he works, quickly impressed with his inspired style, an evidence. To theorize on the question, to find references, to register in a trend, that’s not for him. His real pleasure is spending nights creating, feeding canvases with visions born during night and day dreams. That may be the secret of his painting: written in life, and rooted in earth. Having chosen the abstraction because all the other forms bore him, Hervé Souffi succeeds in mixing the sometimes brutal gesture, the strictly geometrical forms with an overwhelming colour science. Primary colours shattering with almost unvisible transparency, the refinement in shades is unlimited, at ease with the whole palette. From this combination a fantastic energy emerges. And a boldness, which allows pure freedom, no obstacles to creation.
