Access Denied Painting

Self-Portrait. Quote:"The construct of the feminine is in focus of my own favourite piece (out of my nine pieces on show) in the show called Access Denied. Consciously modelled as a self-portrait, Access Denied explores a number of intersecting concerns and resonates conflicting styles. A woman is sitting on a throne-like chair, her nudity screened by a laptop that is turned away from her and invitingly faces the viewer instead. “Username or password invalid” flashes on the screen as you take in the luxuriant red fabric draping her thighs and the clear blue sky overhead, both reminiscent of typical Renaissance history painting, an effect accentuated by the chair. The style obviously clashes with the overt reference to contemporary technology and the packets of luminescent, pink candyfloss surrounding her. Street vendors selling candyfloss (or cotton candy) are a common sight across South Asia. To me it is an ideal symbol of dreams broken – a pretty promise of a bright future experience that inevitably melts into nothingness. What could be a better metaphor for our fast paced yet dis-balanced consumer culture? But surrounded by apparent luxury, she sits naked. But why? May be the artist is asking exactly how much and what are women allowed to own or possess materially, emotionally, physically? She has everything at her disposal, but the choices she makes are limited and restricted by societal structures and expectations. She has apparent access to everything, but come to think of it, does she really? The upper part of the painting (oil on canvas) is partially painted, as if the paint is in process of morphing into a representational image. It is a stylistic choice and brings into focus the act of painting or mark making itself (which interests me more perhaps because I am an autodidact myself) while documenting the process by which the paint physically becomes a vehicle for something other than itself!"
