Perhaps the strangest journey of all the pictures in this collection. It began as a portrait of my friend, BP Portrait Award winner, David Lawton. He had agreed to come to the studio to sit for a few portrait sessions. After the first brief sitting the painting hadn't progressed much. We spent the afternoon discussing art instead, quite animatedly, as we tend to whenever we meet. Dave never did manage to return for another session and while the weeks passed and I concentrated on other projects, this sat propped up against a wall, gathering dust. Months later, while going through old bits and pieces lying around the studio, I came across it again and decided to do something with it, see if anything interesting might happen. For some reason, I began to add horns to the head, the flesh started to look like stone and so the transformation toward the final painting emerged, one element at a time over the next two years. A day here, a week there, this process allowed plenty of time for the picture to develop at its own pace, in between more urgent projects. And it was certainly worth the wait. Probably the most sought after of all these paintings.

Painting crept up on me while I was busy doing other things. Not that I haven’t been drawing and making things as far back as I can recall, I have. It found me early on but seemed to wander off again. Much as I meandered away from my art education, much as I lost all sense of why I became an illustrator. A painting finds me as if stalking something else beyond my view. I’m seized by it and almost always surprised by what it becomes. I rarely employ a formula. Every piece determines the method of its creation and each tends to develop organically, everything in flux until the last moment.
