After the Rain in the Rose Garden Painting

The freshness of the air from the afternoon rain floats through the gardens of the chateau as the lady of the Manor enjoys choosing roses for the dinner party this evening. Her two, darling dogs wait obediently as she stops at the rose trees to touch a soft pink bloom. This lovely home has been her dream and sanctuary, a place to gather friends and family, nestled in the beauty of spacious grounds and gardens. As I traveled through France and Germany and across the countryside of England, I often stopped at the chateaus and Manor houses and relaxed in the gardens. I felt as if time was standing still. In this painting I wanted to share the powerful structure of the building, the ancient trees and stone pathways, the reflecting pools and fountains to recreate an atmosphere of reverence for times past. Positioning the building on the canvas took a great deal of consideration. I needed to present a large building, and at the same time, I did not want to overpower the young woman in the garden. Working with perspective, sketching ideas and then drawing on canvas, blocking out color, recognizing light flow, and adding layers of glazes helped to create the rich patina on building walls and stone pathways. May you delight as you walk with her in this scene of tranquility and feel her profound sense of oneness with her environment.
