In my 31-year university teaching career my favorite subject to teach was figure drawing. The spelling and pronouncement of my last name changed in 1990, making the date of this drawing before that date, probably the late 1980s. So this drawing is signed J. Eldridge Smith. The class size was usually small so I often demonstrated the lesson of the day or week and also during the long poses I drew with the students as a way of demonstrating how their final drawing might look. I also painted small paintings in pastel or oils during the extended poses. I was careless about dating these drawings as I mostly just saved them in a portfolio of like drawings. The soft edges on the upper leg and arm suggest that I made a light pencil drawing to get the composition and accurate rendering of the figure. Still, if one looked for academically correct proportions, one could criticise my accuracy with the final proportions is this drawing. In many cases I will favor a freely rendered drawing over academic accuracy. I refer to it as my personal style. Lights, darks and middle tone were added with soft pastels for the final effect. This pastel drawing has been sprayed with fixative and will be shipped with a protective sheet of glassine interleaving translucent paper. This paper may pick up a trace to the pastel. The drawing will be shipped unmated in a flat package and without a mat or frame.
