‘Aftersmoke’ is made using a little known artform called Intarsia. Intarsia is a form of wood inlaying. It entails the joining together of individual cut pieces of wood to create mosaic-like images with sophisticated perspective. Each painting is formed using hundreds of individual hand-cut pieces in varying depth (3-30mm) which creates striking three-dimensional illusions. The piece ‘Aftersmoke’ is multi-layered to create natural shadow. Each piece of the painting is cut by hand using a jigsaw or scroll saw and then hand shaped and sanded to form the desired curves and sculptured effect. Each piece is then primed, painted, sealed and finally glued into position. Considering there are hundreds of pieces and the process painstaking and complicated, the end result still remains wonderfully clean and simplistic. The intarsia process starts with a detailed line drawing to use as the main template. There are no short-cuts with intarsia. No computer or laser cutting is used, nor even a router as the individual shaping is random and varies. Every piece of my works is done by hand, even down to the frames and the purpose made timber canvas needed to support the weight. ‘Aftersmoke’ I battled for nearly 2 months to complete!

Artist Profile Name: Dominic Peters_________________________________ I am 53 male. I was born in England and moved to Australia as a child. I was raised on Sydney's Northern Beaches. I spent 10 years working in Melbourne and on my return to Sydney moved to Balmain and then Henley. I now reside in Stanmore with my two children. I have worked as a professional mosaic artist for the last 15 years and completed many private and commercial commissions. You will see the influence of mosaic in my artworks. I am obsessed with forming a whole from individual pieces. I enjoy the dimension and play of light which cannot be duplicated on a flat canvas. I love the simplicity of the finished product, especially considering how complex the works are to produce. The negative space gives a clean, modern and striking framework to showcase and highlight the picture. Each picture is made up of hundreds of hand shaped pieces. The concept is drawn and then shaped to suit. I use depth in random pieces to create perspective. The individual pieces are mostly shaped from plywood but I have also used ceramic and glass mosaic tiles. Each piece is primed and individually painted. All pieces are then sealed or varnished. I work in a derelict Sydney petrol station to give me the space and freedom to make as much noise and mess as I need.
