About The Artwork

I've completed a small series of these mixed media paintings that reference battlefields. They are concerned with the sanitation of visceral events and the coding of these events in to neat maps and chronologies as a historical perspective tends to do. Once coded they can be digested and palatable. I add further to this sanitation with elements from the domestic landscape (the cupboard door and fabric). The final layer of 'the domestication' is the inclusion of dolls house furniture which plays with scale and implies a simplification of events. I think it all refers to a deep seated guilt for an interest in war and battles not largely from a historical context - more from the way we digest these events as children in the form of toys and fiction. It is the fiction of these events that and their 'carpet level' playground understanding that i find so interesting.... and the guilt conscience that recognises that this is a false understanding.
