Original Oil on canvas
Excerpt from Roberson Museum and Science Center Exhibition Catalogue Essay "Which Came First:
The Cosmos Or The Chaos?" by Albert Boime, Art Historian

Finally, in his latest work, 2021: America As A Third World (2003), Hall parodies the French master Paul Cézanne’s Card Players (1892-94), depicting two totally self-absorbed figures seated next to a wall on which hangs a painting of an open laptop computer and mouse. The painting abstractly mirrors the table covered with a white tablecloth whose tilted perspective extends through the computer itself. Hall seems to comment here on the contrast between a world of socially interactive beings and one in which the computer has become the central source of communication and “user-friendly” company. The modern spectator faces the two worlds not knowing whether to read the computer screen or the scene of the concentrating players, projecting the ultimate alienation of the citizenry two decades from now.
