The entirety of the works of Basso, nevertheless the undeniable originality, is based on a deep reflection concerning the great artistic styles of the Past, the Italian one in particular. We can admire this meticulous study, for example, in the precision of the graphic sign, brief but not redundant, typical of the accuracy of the Renaissance, while it’s not hard to read, in the silent atmosphere and isolated figures, a more meditative and solipsistic attitude, almost metaphysical, not far from the essential art of masters like De Chirico and Morandi. His tact is filtered by the strict maze of contemporaneity, in which the artist is absorbed but not buried, always working on the interpretation of the surrounding stimulations; nothing is dogmatic. In this context, we can understand the reasons why the artist prefers to use the sincere and ancient art of Embroidery, rather than use more seductive and technological ways of expression; in the era of virtuality and velocity, Basso proposes a slow and quiet “medium”, obstinate and patient, evoking domestic traditions. Only two other great artists, Alighiero Boetti and Maria Lai, in Italy, made use of this ancient technique. Studying those great predecessors, Basso interprets daily creativity as both a speculative and manual effort, in which the project is cohesive with the real creation, the result with the expressive goal, bearing social and ethical meanings. Inside the private, almost epical, dimension of his study, Basso embroids everyday with the only purpose of express his “inner self”, unconcerned of appearing anachronistic, aware of the global ways of arts but not troubled with that. Colorful strings, neutral cloths, but also floral and striped themes replaced canvas and paint, representing everlasting instruments to conquer the insubstantial. Absorbed in an illusory paradox, where past and future intertwines. Refusing to renounce to the identity of the subject, Basso traces his figures creating perceptual glitches that, in their imperfection, found their paradoxical whole. Calligraphic works in which objects, thoughts and situations are cleansed from the redundant, summarizing the starting theme. Incongruous images coexist in an enigmatic universe, inspiring the audience to continuous mental short circuits and preparing it to an intellectual recovery, a deep contemplation. The artist reformulates iconically the idea of vacuum, he acts by lacks and subtractions creating works with no boundaries , able to transcend the usual perceptive ways. Illustrating emotional and figurative events through a graceful composition, the artist reconnects with the narrative soul of art, suspending it in a dreamlike, poetically revisited, dimension of reality, without any clamour or repentance, finally satisfied with the long-awaited individuality.
