This original work was inspired by a gangster oldie (song) from the 60s called "Just Because". I recalled the feelings of being a youngster in LA, roaming streets and dodging tragedy with friends. I played the song all day, for 12 days, throughout the entire time I worked on the piece. My alter ego letter A –influenced by NY hip-hop graffiti bubble letters, i.e. a “throw-up”– is outlined in gold, and stands slightly off kilter. The lyrics, sprayed in opaque rich blue –in 70s LA gang writing– are layered between the raw white of the paper and various coats of deep burgundy, creating depth. The dynamic line quality, complimentary color and formal “pixels” complete the strong composition. This large drawing is on archival 100% rag paper (375 gsm). It is drawn on separate various sized sections of paper, to recreate naturally occurring wall inconsistencies, and allows for easier transport and storage.

Rojelio Cabral, and alter ego ANGST, has been drawing graffiti and street art of the letter A for 25 years. His most recent work combines the letter A painted and cut from paper, with song lyrics written in complex and striking alphabets. Best known for the pervasive drawing of his bubble letter A on freeway center-columns throughout Southern California, he’s recognized for the way his A, character-like, played with scale, perspective and wall edges rather than merely stamped on the surface. He was among the first to combine West Coast gang writing with East Coast Hip Hop graffiti and to work in sculptural graffiti, embedding letter A’s into the cityscape. Rojelio has participated in many exhibitions, from the first LA museum show to include graffiti in 1994, “Urban Revisions: Current Projects for the Urban Realm” at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, to 2012’s “Street Cred: Graffiti Art from Concrete to Canvas” at the Pasadena Museum of California Art.
