About The Artwork

About the Collection: Flora Urbana imagines an alternate history or potential future where the design of classical and neo-classical architectural ornamentation was intentionally adapted to represent local and endemic plants as the style spread throughout the colonial world. Both fantasy and commentary, the collection deals with the complicated history of globalization, the value of local traditions, biodiversity, and cultural patrimony. Subject of the Painting: Anguloa Virginalis, commonly known as a swaddled baby orchid, is found in Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia in wet mountain forests. Addition Information: This work was produced while completing an artist in residence at IdiomArt in Cuenca Ecuador in 2023. This painting was featured in Flora Urbana, a solo show in the Gershwin Gallery at IdiomArt.
