About The Artwork

Apache pony Whinny #1 has a sister painting in Apache pony Whinny #2 I was inspired to paint this series after a deeply influential time in the wild open expanses of the Californian desert and in the Spanish sierras. Expansive in many senses, such a vast land, free, open, and generous like the people that I met and warmth and the wonderful natural light. These paintings are optimistic that the world is opened out and is filled with colour and I express it once again with my horses and their native American symbols incorporated into the working of these paintings I have observed, worked with, and painted horses since childhood, horses are my muse. Horses are my enduring inspiration. I love working with, visiting, and studying the natural aptitudes of horses, I am drawn to the lines of their form, the style in their freedom of movement, their social behavior, inquisitiveness, and the trust in the wisdom in their eyes. I paint spontaneously to convey the essence of captured movement and expression. High-quality acrylics, varnishes, and inks build up the patina, adding and detracting paint; using palette knives, brushes, fingers, making marks with trailed paint, sticks, and feathers.

Look around! The world is full of past and future. The marks we made and are yet to make. As a painter and ceramicist inspired by the natural world, I use color, form, and texture to explore the relationship between the present and the past. My work often features archetypal imagery like horses, animals, people, landscapes and seascapes. Through my paintings of horses, I aim to map a courageous and empathic path to rediscovering our primal human drives and vulnerabilities. The horse represents the ideal, universal embodiment of natural power. I depict the horse obscured by veils, which alter its appearance while allowing its essence to remain visible. The veils symbolise the passage of time and the layers of cultural, historical and religious influences that reframe our core impulses. By revealing the original form beneath these veils, I seek to facilitate a visceral connection to our shared human origins across all eras. My goal is to create immersive works that speak to our common humanity.
