Metascapes explore the transitional space between realism and abstraction where a dream-like inner meditative quality can emerge. Metascapes are certainly, on one level, seascapes, and yet again they are not, for the images are created without reference to any actually viewed scene, and the horizon line can be perceived to be the illusory boundary for what may be above and below the surface of our awareness.

I have created artwork for over 40 years in a variety of media and am interested in exploring a synthesis of representational, abstract, and ambient imagery to create work that is expressive and evokes a self-reflective inner response from the viewer. I try to adhere to a practice that honors “first thought, best thought” and serendipity within a given format and composition. I have shown my work locally as well as internationally. My studio is in Santa Monica, CA where I currently serve as an Arts Commissioner. Michael Baroff's work is reminiscent of the paintings of Mark Rothko and has a mystical and spiritual quality, to be appreciated in an intimate relationship between the image and viewer. - Scott Canty, Director and Curator, Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery Form and matter are in continuous transformation within the space they are understood. Everything changes, from the most complex body in nature to the smallest particle. It is energy that gives form to what is in princple shapeless yet a powerful form. Michael Baroff’s artistic investigation is exactly in this direction, particularly in the Space-Form-Energy relationship, where space is the place of action available for form/matter indentified by a synthesis in terms of lines and colors, inserting the randomness that is reflective of change and incidence. The result is an almost metaphysical study that passes through the space of interiority. - Frederica D’Avanzo, Art Curator, M.A.D.S. Gallery, Milan, Italy
