About The Artwork

This work is part of my latest series on the reinterpretation of important works of art in an 'apoptotic' key. In this case the most famous hands in the world, those of Leonardo's Mona Lisa, are the centrepiece of a whirlwind of anthropomorphic bodies that create an eight-infinite. The work is on paper and A4 size.

My name is Danilo Maccarone and I am an Italian artist and an art teacher in middle school, born in 1985. I graduated in Painting from the Academy of Fine Arts in L’Aquila. For several years my artistic research has been developing around “Apoptosis”, a process that in medicine is called “programmed cell death” or “cell suicide”; in practice some cells in our body commit suicide so as not to infect others. Since 2013 I have been working on this issue after viewing laboratory slides of some apoptosis. I am interested in the relationship between emptiness and full, space and figure, perception and sensation. In my works I use bic pens as the main and initial instrument (my works always arise from a doodle in which I subsequently look for form) with which I combine other techniques (acrylic, graphite, watercolor, collage) and try to give light to anthropomorphic bodies floating in the background. My latest series focuses on revisiting in an apoptotic key of famous artists from art history (intervening on old prints found in second-hand markets). I have exhibited in several group and solo exhibitions. I live and work in L’Aquila, Italy.
