About The Artwork

An old black and white photo inspired this painting. I love its vintage, 50s feel. It's a period that has a huge influence on my work in general. The 40s, 50s and 60s have fascinated me since childhood. As a little girl, I used to read old comics from that period for their graphics. The cinema, fashion, literature and decoration of these 3 decades fascinate me with their style, colors and shapes. This painting is the first in a series I'm going to devote to the seaside style of those years. Only part of the figure's face can be seen, as I often like to leave an element of mystery and questioning in my work. It's up to the viewer to imagine what the character might look like. As I always start with black and white photos, I take great pleasure in researching colors and then finding the combination that suits me best. I use oil paint, which is my favorite medium. I love its sensuality, its smell and its smoothness. I work in successive thin layers.

Karine WAGENER is a French painter who was born in Paris, and works there in her studio. In her very close portraits with bright, immediate forms, the artist poses flat areas of vivid colors that collide, free, bold, sometimes biting or sour. Although she often starts from photographs, she recomposes the frame to its own way and metamorphoses them through the sensuality of the oil. She then moves away from the glossy paper and advertising posters to fit into the portrait painting tradition. From the bottom of the child's or woman's eyes staring the spectator, comes a mysterious innocence, a certain dreamlike, distant happiness, it's a hymn to feminity and glamor in all its forms, in all its nuances.
