The book The Aphrodite of Knidos and Her Successors by Christine Havelock traces the development of the female nude from the original Knidian version to the famous Aphrodite of Melos I deploy most frequently. (Ky.-born Jim Dine has used the Melos version frequently as have countless contemporary artists.) Who doesn’t know this famous face? I paint her to convey a knowing contemplation of the world around her.
