About The Artwork

This work started its life with humble beginnings as a strip of canvas roll off-cut that was initially used to experiment with different varnish treatments for metallic paint - none, matte, satin, and gloss. As time progressed, and while working on some other works, this scrap canvas was used to dry foam rollers that had been used to lay paint on other paintings. Next up, toothed silicone implements, most often used for pottery or ceramics work, was used to apply leftover paint from working on layers of other paintings. Gradually, a completely serendipitous composition emerged from the chaos and madness, and subsequent stages of development of the work became more deliberate, in pursuit of the emerging conception. The title "As it Happened" has dual meanings: one the one hand, it hints at the serendipitous and spontaneous nature of the work, and on the other hand it hints at the work developing as an artifact or side effect of the development of the other main works I was working on at the time - so the work almost serves as a record of or witness to the development of those other works. In the composition, there are multiple horizontal slices that run vertically down the work - appearing like the representation of time slices or sequential phases, with each "slice" containing at its center a distorted or faulty depiction of something resembling a clock face, but there appears to be no rhyme or reason as to the time indicated, as if the time exists outside of a regular chronology and rather in some kind of alternate and nonsensical dimension of time. Inside each slice appears a frenetic and turbulent assemblage of gestures, appearing at once calligraphic while also hinting at contents of a scene associated with the time of the slice, like a frame in a strip of film.\ Finally, in keeping with many of my works, there is free calligraphy or asemic writing incorporated into the work, in the form of the vertical strip that runs down the work just to the left of the vertical line of "clocks".
