Aspens Golden Glow Painting

This painting was inspired by the trip to the Woods Lake in the Eldorado National Forest, South of HWY 88. It was one of the last weekends of the warm weather in the fall. The colors in the Hope Valley were amazing, with leaves turning red, orange, and golden yellow. After having a picnic by the lake, enjoying the views of towering stands of ponderosa pines and dazzling reflections of majestic mountains surrounding the lake, I did a small study of an island along the water edge, which was glowing in the high-altitude sun. The daylight was quickly disappearing, so I packed my oils and plein-air set-up, getting ready to leave. We left the campsite and were driving on the dirt road towards HWY 88, when I noticed an old abandoned coral, overgrown with grasses. It looked lost among the tall aspens, with the leaves shimmering in the wind like liquid gold in the light of setting sun. The view was stunning, and I had to stop and take pictures. Unfortunately, the sun was setting too fast for me to attempt to paint another study, so I just stood there for a while and observed, taking in the colors, the sounds, the smells, trying to remember the feel. Later in my studio, I used the pictures of that scene and my oil studies painted on location, as well as the vivid memories of the scene etched in my mind, to paint the “Aspens Golden Glow”. Materials: Oil on oil-primed Claessens Belgian linen, mounted on the archival museum quality Gatorfoam panel. Painting surface is protected with a coat of Gamvar varnish. Framed in a black 2"-wide wood frame and ready to hang.
