About The Artwork

"Assume the Lightness", is part of a series called “My Tribe: In our Aging World,” which addresses society’s misconceptions on growing old and raises awareness of our aging population and encourages a dialogue between the two. We bear the loss of youth by understanding that our thoughts of the “rush” and “busyness” become less. Our responsibilities become lighter and things that were important before becomes frivolous. The painting is on a large sheet of canvas that I have pulled and frayed at the edges to loosen the fibers. The distress canvas is screwed onto a wood paneled frame that looks weathered. These treatments to the canvas and frame further strengthen the symbolism of our aging bodies. The human form dominates the canvas in size to reinforce the message I am projecting to the viewer. The message is that our aging population is growing, vital to society, and full of splendor. My goal is to get people to understand our aging population in a more compassionate way.

I am an abstract painter expressing my work by exploring the relationship between nature and our environment. Using dialogue between the two can be my best source of inspiration. The tactility of multiple textures and building of layers, are the backbones of my pieces. The severity of the elements can age and weather and create the most interesting designs. The distressed look of patina on metal and dilapidating walls intrigues me by their abstract surfaces and patterns. These textures and layers give depth and dimension to my paintings and are common elements in all my series. I currently live and work in the Berkshires on Western Massachusetts.
