About The Artwork
Inspired by Japanese gestural drawings and the blurs of motion/cars/people/light/noise from the second-story window of my busy Los Angeles apartment--as well as Robert Motherwell's ink drawings in a volume turned to Brush Elegy at the time the painting came together. I love to make paintings that brim with the motion of drawing that are still very much paintings. The spontaneity of gesture in many drawings prepared me for this layered painting, in which there are many quick-paced drawings on top of more drawings. I was after conveying an upward, hopeful expansive feeling that stands alone but is also connected to others and the world.
