About The Artwork
The title refers to the third level within the Nine Circles of Hell from Dante's Inferno, Gluttony. Rather than abstaining from gluttony, the figure instead choose to purge. Atop of the oil rendering, two verses are written. The transparent green is text from modern writings concerning the sin of gluttony which is paraphrased from various internet sites. The less transparent magenta is Canon VI from Dante's Inferno that describes the 3rd Circle. The writing obscures the figures just enough for the viewer to understand that there is an underlying reason for purging. The painting is coated with a Damar varnish and set in a sturdy 4 inch wood frame.
