About The Artwork

Tapping into the realms of quantum physics and astronomy, this series considers the malleability of perception. It's a symptom of human nature to attempt to define our world, particularly when it comes to such fundamental notions as time and place. For example, as children we learned that the Northern and Southern Hemispheres present opposing seasons, but when I immigrated, I encountered a paradigm shift--I couldn't have anticipated the impact that a 23.4 degree axial tilt would have on my cultural identity. This series, has solidified for me the truth that our ideas about time (and how we mark its passing) are as much a construct as a cartographer's interpretation of the planet. It's all a matter of perception that we agree to accept. The floating figures in my paintings on glass aptly translate the sensation of displacement this new awareness imposed on me. There is no up, no down, no horizon to speak of. The movement of stars, even time itself seemed constant until that awareness uprooted me. Much like traditional conceptions of time and space, opaque painting surfaces dictate where the viewer (and also the maker) must stand to experience them. They fill in the blanks, and by and large they conclude in a singular composition once complete. Alternatively, naked glass isn't fixed; the periphery is continuously absorbed into its ever-changing picture plane. There are two visible sides that exist simultaneously; two worlds that strongly resemble one another, but are deeply nuanced. These paintings highlight the fact that not only painting, but reality itself is dependent on perception and location.

Jennifer Whitten, an American artist, immigrated to Melbourne, Australia, in 2009. At the start of her career, her fastidious, highly skilled manner of working seemed well suited for medical illustration, but Jennifer quickly abandoned medical studies in pursuit of her own artistic investigations. For years, her photorealistic paintings have navigated the aestheticisation of absence and autobiographical nostalgia; and most recently, after an encounter in Italy with a collection of 18th century reverse-glass paintings, she determined that glass would serve as an ideal conduit of these themes. Oil, reverse-glass and representational painting have lengthy histories, but Jennifer’s edgy recontextualisation of these methods upends any hint of the conventional. Incorporating everything from steel, to video, to live music, her complex installations defy the traditional 2D confines set for painting, but preserve its seduction and sincerity. In 2015, Jennifer completed her Masters in Contemporary Art at the Victorian College of the Arts. She was the recipient of the Athenaeum Club Visual Arts Research Award, the University’s most prestigious honor, worth $15,000. Jennifer is also a proud tenant of the Abbotsford Convent, the largest arts precinct in Australia.
