For centuries sex has been regarded as a natural and healthy function of the male character, and by contrast as an act of compliance and obligation for women. My purpose with this painting is not to simply subvert certain standards of ‘masculine’ and ‘feminine’, but instead take ubiquitous tableaus of women as sexually passive objects, and present them as sexually autonomous subjects. Through symbolism and subtext, I hope to contribute to a normalization of the active sexual woman in art, in this case, through the declaration of unashamed enjoyment of men by a woman. By this concept, women are no longer conquests, passive vessels reacting to their active counterparts, but instead equal participants in the sexual adventure.
