Bananas Painting

I lived in Africa as a child so am very conscious of the issues around colonialism. I live in a country now, that is not my birth country. I live on the edge of the Mediterranean Sea where the migrant issue looms large. Many of us are on the move and nothing is certain except uncertainty. I make art that addresses these issues, so my work is portable, made on up cycled supports that can be folded and transported easily. Here, I have used the short cut metaphor of old maps to show the geopolitical nature of history with a simple, repeated image (bananas) that come loaded with contentious symbolism and which, being slightly phallic, nod to a male dominated capitalist view of the world.
