About The Artwork

This work was inspired by the cowgirl poet, Amy Hale Auger. With her permission, I used her poem in the background of my image. The poem evokes the rough and tumble life of those who live a true cowboy / cowgirl life. I chose to paint this because I was inspired by seeing this powerful, authentic and hilarious cowgirl poet speak about her experiences working and living outdoors. I have included the poem below: Bear-Souled Permission granted to stand at my funeral and say I told you so. Permission granted to stand with Styrofoam cups of bad coffee and say, "I told her not to go." Permission granted to stay safe and warm inside four walls with right angle corners, peer through screens while some of us fling open the blinds, unlock the doors, unlace our corsets, kick off our shoes, and walk off, bear-souled. B-E-A-R S-O-U-L We squish idea mud up through our toes. And I will go. I will go out there where there are no trails or trains, curbs or curtains, boxes or banks, paved streets or parking spaces, men or motors, buildings or bridges, no street signs or Safeways... And you type into the comment box: BE CAREFUL Oh, I will be. I will be free, willing eager, passionate. I will be so much. I will be firy, hot, dirty, cold, sweaty, thirsty, joyful, triumphant, exhausted. I will be reeking with woodsmoke and wild. Oh, I will care. I will care deeply about each animal and plant, each shift in the weather, each leaf and stem and root and berry and egg and nest and season and flower and seed and scent... Oh, I will care. And I will return full— so full that it will flow over like a fountain and splash onto your shoes. And you will say, "That wasn't what I meant." I know. You meant... be safe, And small. And quiet. And still. And less. And normal and sheltered and rhymed and metered and ruled, like paper with neat straight lines. You meant, don't make so many waves or wanderings or words. Or tracks in the sand. Buy a purse like mine. Permission granted to stand at my funeral and say I told you so. Be careful.

I am a multi-disciplinary artist based in Austin, Texas. I make work that focuses on environmental issues using sustainable studio practices. I source site specific soils and other natural materials from different areas around Texas and the country to produce my own paint. Through my work,I raise awareness of climate change as a human issue to innovate and protect the resources that we have. I am an autodidact who has also trained in classical and intuitive painting. I strike a balance between the two by creating a structured plan for each work, allowing for freedom for my intuition. I find that systems in nature and science work with a balance of predictable patterns and chaos. This balance between structure and freedom are imperative to my work. The flow of water is a central theme in my work. I mix water and paint and allow it to flow freely within the boundaries of the lines that I have planned. I work with water and soil because I am fascinated with fluid dynamics, and I love letting nature take part in the creation of each piece of work. This aspect of my work mirrors nature in the way that even seemingly chaotic events, such as a waterfall, can evoke a sense of calm and wonder. I hope that the viewer will feel quieted by my work, much as they would if they were sitting in a pristine natural landscape. My work celebrates the peaceful and messy aspects of the natural world, and in doing so, I would like to encourage viewers to celebrate those same aspects in themselves.
