About The Artwork

Description: The pandanus palm offers its leaves for the weaving of the dillybag. Like the Barramundi, she is a provider to the people. And the people only take what is needed. We source, we gather, we share. Symbolically, Barra in a Dillybag’ is honouring the gifts and lessons we inherit from our teachers, Elders, and ancestors. The artist pays respect and special mention to his Elder, teacher, and uncle: Johnny Daylight Lacey. The dillybag carries and transports valuable items to be shared, which is key to survival and abundance. Barra in a Dillybag symbolises the transportation and transmission of knowledge shared throughout the generations. For women, the Waterlily symbolises fertility, birth and the beginning of life. For men and women, it represents the journey of determination and resilience—growing from the mud, travelling through the dark, and reaching the light. Lyle Ah Sam is a Mitakoodi / Wakka Wakka man with multiple First Nations ancestries. He is a contemporary rarrk (also spelt raark) artist that uses traditional mediums and techniques. The story and subject in his works, whether an animal or plant species, possess a spiritual essence, a soul, and they carry a message. His artworks are a transmission of cultural knowledge, spiritual guidance and Lyle's exploration of the Spirit of Place. Lyle's inspiration is sourced from his culture, spirit, family, and his relationship with land, sky, and sea.
