About The Artwork

Facing north towards the island of Kerrera, Barrnacarry Bay is located at the southern entrance to Loch Feochan in the Lorn district of Argyll and Bute. It takes its name from the nearby settlement of Barrnacarry which lies a mile (1.5 km) northwest of Kilninver and 6 miles (10 km) south of Oban. The bay is not reachable by vehicles and the only people here are occasional walkers and sailors who use the quiet gravel beach as anchorage. In fact it is a surprise if one encounters another human being on a typical day. This view is from the south looking out over the seawater loch. Strong coastal winds whip up fast moving and dramatic cloud formations which tumble over the hills in an ever changing spectacle of light. On this typically cloudy day the landscape is bathed in yellow light filtered through cumulus cloud formations. I have attempted to portray the loneliness and isolation of the environment with the inclusion of a solitary and enigmatic figure who faces us, equally unsure of our reasons for being there.

Shipping & Returns

Delivery Time:Typically 5-7 business days for domestic shipments, 10-14 business days for international shipments.

My work is primarily figurative – landscapes, portraits and narrative paintings in oil, acrylic and gouache. I never tire of the challenge of rendering a subject in a ‘realistic’ manner whilst at the same time weaving in a story, mood and personality to the piece. In the more narrative compositions, I have attempted to invite the viewer to construct the ‘story’ in their own minds from the content of the picture. My portraits seek by use of pose, composition, colour and tone to give an understanding of the subject’s character beyond the physical likeness. In my landscapes I like to convey the atmosphere and mood of the environment, so the viewer ‘feels’ as much as ‘views’. I work in my garden studio in Kingston on Thames, and my work can be viewed at ricksmithart.webnode.com
