ABOUT THE ARTWORK

“Beastly Games” is one of a series of works exploring our complex and contradictory relationships with other animals. These narrative works employ anthropomorphism to emphasize the biological, and the experiential connections between human and non-human animals. Are these beastly human beings or are the beasts human-like in their behaviour? The works ultimately depict images of animal exploitation in which, ironically, it appears that the animals themselves are the protagonists. The irony is that animals do not capture other animals in order to cage them, torture them nor train them to fight, race, work or perform tricks.

Claude Jones is a New Zealand-born artist, whose work explores the complex relationship between humans, animals, and the natural world. Jones’s sculptures are curious crossbreeds of animal, human and plant, evoking the fantasy realm of children’s books, but with a sombre twist. Her use of narrative, irony and symbolism, invites viewers to re-evaluate their relationship with nature, and in particular, with other animals. With an art career spanning over 15 years, Claude Jones has exhibited widely. She has been the recipient of several awards, grants and scholarships, including 10 international artist residencies. Jones’s artworks are represented in public and private collections around the world. Claude Jones is a plant-eating pacifist who passionately believes in the emancipation of all innocent beings. Her artwork reflects this philosophy.
