About The Artwork

Be sweet, be kind, be modest, be polite. Be beautiful, be demure. Be smart, but don't be too smart. Be strong, be independent. Have babies, don't let a man hold you back. Everyone seems to have some picture in their head of what a woman is, or what we should be. I wonder, in moments like these, what Guan Yin would do, if she were a modern woman in today's world, legs folded under under in her lotus seat. I'd like to think that the goddess of mercy, is all her wisdom and grace, would give us the stink eye and swan off to live her fullest life.

Yanqing Low (b.1895, Singapore) is an emerging artist who works in New York City. She graduated in 2023 with a Masters in Fine Art from the New York Academy of Art where she was the recipient of the Academy Scholar Award and the Rick & Monica Segal Scholarship. Her works are a part of private collections and have been featured in publications and shows in Singapore and New York. Her abstract paintings are made with pastels, oil paint, and charcoal, beginning with a drawing which she then works pigment and color around, teasing out sense memories that are embedded within material and image. Inspired by abstract and figurative painters before her, such as Julie Methru, Rebecca Purdum, Robert Ryman and Cecily Brown, she explores embodied sense as it is encapsulated within place and time.
