Painted in 2008, this piece is a very early example of my work as an abstract expressionist, in fact one of the first 4 to be started, one of the first 10 to be finished. At this stage, despite my work being injected with something of a looser, more energetic style to my previous endeavours, my painting technique was nonetheless similar to my figurative work in that I still completed my paintings in their entirety with brushes, and quite small ones at that, ordinarily for an accuracy led approach to creating artwork. However I clearly managed to realise an energetic and free, yet florid style, definitely retaining elements of figurative art. There are many optical illusions incorporated into this work - faces, bodies in part, a sense of event/occurrence and location, in spite of an otherwise completely abstract painting at first glance, even initial study of the piece. It took time for me to pour real energy into the physical creation of my work, energy which multiplied probably exponentially over time, yet at this stage, though the work seems as animated by real movement as my later work, my brushwork was more deliberate and concentrated than what was to become my increasingly energetic and almost bull in a china shop, boorish application of paint a decade or so later. I like my work to be equivocal, even I dare say circumlocutory and to dance around multiple concepts and meanings that are often, possibly always extemporaneous in origin, to my mind delving into the nature of the subconscious and the oneiric. This piece therefore is somehow both happy, even effervescent, whilst saturnine, even somnolent, both implosive and explosive in a similarly paradoxical fashion. I relish in that in life which is mysterious, the arcane and esoteric, that which embodies antithesis, antimony and the paradox... I opted to frame this painting with a particularly distressed 19th century finely detailed composition frame, an item I came across in a search for a frame that compliments the piece as a juxtaposition, an antithesis of old and new, a transition from traditional painting techniques to a contemporary approach, symbolising respect and honour of artistic traditions past, whilst hunger, vigour, and Thrive for The New, The Contemporary, The Extemporaneous...
