About The Artwork
I live in a city known for its steel industry and Ive always fascinated by its industrial landscape, whether from the ground or through my aerial photography. This work is a photo encaustic: photography mixed with encaustics. It is made from hot, molten beeswax I have mixed with damar resin, a sap from trees in Malaysia and Indonesia. I then add dry pigments for colour. It has layer upon layer of wax, each being fused to the previous with a blow torch, worked in a way to create texture. The sky is done with oil paints on the wax. Beneath the texture is pigmented shellac I have burned, painting with the flame of a torch, coaxing it into a network of lacy streams. The work is painted on a birch cradled substrate. The sides are painted in black acrylic. It is ready to hang with wire and D-rings. The piece is signed and dated on the back and comes with care and background information.

The arts and creative world have long been a part of my life, beginning with painting and illustrating from a very young age to a 22-year career in fashion design and pattern-making in the high-end of Toronto's fashion industry.
