For the past twenty-two years, Jaren has explored reflections primarily on water. He has been fascinated by light dancing on water since he was a child. It is the abstraction created in a moment of time. Seems never repeated in quite the same way, whicht he finds intriguing. He then manipulates the image in his computer to add saturation, distortions, additional colors or scale. It is out of this process of creation he discovers the final subject to paint. In the last few years he has introduced geometric forms to contrast with the organic shapes of the reflected image. Once the subject is determined he decides on the final size and shape of the final painting. The next step is applying four or five coats of Acrylic Gesso to the smooth side of the quarter inch thick Masonite. The final white gesso surface is an ideal surface to apply the pencil drawing in preparation to applying the Acrylic paint. Masonite has been used for fine art painting since its introduction to the mass market in1929. Jaren has found this substrate to be dimensionally stable and when the surface properly primed tends not to crack over time. Unlike oil paint on canvas, Masonite does not stretch and is a hard surface, and is not prone to damaged if poked from behind. Which can easily happen when, for example, one canvas is leaned against another or a table's corner.
